Grisaille
Grisaille is a painting technique that uses shades of gray (or a single colour) to create a monochromatic composition, often used to simulate the look of sculpture or to underpaint for other layers of colour. The term is derived from the French word "gris", meaning gray. Grisaille helps artists focus on values and composition without the complexities of colour. As a finished artwork, Grisaille can create a realistic, three-dimensional effect with light and shadow.
